In my Grandfather’s diary entry on Wednesday 28 April 1943, when we was on leave in Alexandria, he wrote of visiting Stanley Bay in Alexandria. These photos were possibly taken on this day. The caption to the photo is what he had written on the back of the photo.

It amazes me people can be so distant from destruction and death only hours away. Wonderful snapshots from a horrible time in our world’s history.
Yes it’s like he’s on holiday – but obviously he is well away from the front at this point in the diary
