Not sure where exactly this picture was taken or when, but I believe it would have been in Libya possibly in 1941 or 1942 by the dry barren landscape.  In the entry on Sunday February 22nd 1942, my grandfather says “Another beautiful sunny day.  Wore shorts for first time since November” while they were out in the desert in Libya digging weapon pits and laying landmines.
