Sunday May 9

Day 763

Arose early doing washing.  Afternoon down to Canal for swim – rather nice there – can buy tea – cold drinks & cakes etc.  Water still lovely & cool.  At night played housie then continued writing.

The unconditional surrender of all axis troops in Tunisia takes at 11am.

Monday May 10

Day 764

Usual morning really doing nothing again at Canal for swim afterwards.  In evening attend Naafi Concert held outside patients mess – but was not very good.  Finished Mum’s letter tonight.

Tuesday May 11

Day 765

Fighting in Tunisia now drawing to close(?) great victory.  Usual swimming in afternoon, writing to Erin(?) at night.

Wednesday May 12

Day 766

Days are getting monotonous – only enjoyable part is the swimming most afternoons – am now lovely & brown.  Another concert held at night given by the ??? R.E’s(?) exceptionally witty show.

Surrender of all German and Italian forces in Tunisia (130,000 German and 120,000 Italian prisoners). General von Arnim and 25 other axis generals are claimed captured, so ending the life of the once mighty ‘Afrika Korps’ and marking the end of the three-year North African campaign.

Thursday May 13

Day 767

Axis Armies surrendered in Tunisia.  In afternoon usual swim.  Today swum across Canal to Palestine – is much further than really looks.  Played housie at night afterwards writing.

Marshal Messe, the Italian C in C of Tunisia, surrenders to Montgomery.

Friday May 14

Day 768

Inspection in morning.  Afternoon six of guard acted as pall-bearers for Maori who died…
