Macchu Picchu is a must do destination for any traveller to Peru.  Its quite simply spectacular, and I’ll be sure to do a post about that in future.  As Macchu Picchu is high up in the mountains, when you are visiting, you will likely stay in the small township of Aguas Calientes in the valley below the Incan ruins.

This is also where you will arrive if you are coming via train and not walking the Inca Trail.  There is no other way into town by road.  The Inca trail takes a few days to walk.  Train takes less than 2 hours from Ollantaytambo.  We went by train, it was much easier on the legs 😉

The town itself is nothing particularly special, a selection of restaurants and cafes for tourists, but is easily walkable if you wish to explore.  The only real reason you would go stay here is to visit Macchu Picchu, but the surrounding scenery is spectacular and the rushing rivers that run near the town are beautiful.

When visiting up to the ruins, you have two choices – a very steep walk up hill or a quick bus ride.  Again we took the bus as it was easier on the legs 😉
