On our return journey from Myanmar, the meals were a lot better than the meals out of Christchurch. You can read about those here.
The short flight from Yangon, Myanmar to Singapore had a meal served almost immediately after takeoff. This time it was a basic salad of lettuce, tomato slices, cucumber slices, carrot sticks and a slice of lemon. Interestingly there was no dressing.
The main dish was yellow lentil dhal, yellow rice and a coconut curry with an Indian style bread. This was again delicious.
The dessert was one I wasn’t familiar with, similar to Gulab Jamun with sweet balls of yummy in a honey syrup. There were sprinklings of pistachios too.
A very tasty and substantial meal for a short flight.
I didn’t note what the options were from the main dining cart but Mum had some type of pork which she said was very nice.
For the next leg of our journey, we had two meals, dinner shortly after leaving Singapore and then breakfast about 2 hours from arrival in Christchurch.
For dinner, the meal was great. Vegetable curry, rice and dhal. The bread roll was different to the regular dining one but didn’t seem to be an Indian bread that I could tell.
The dessert seemed to be identical to the one on the previous flight from Yango but without the honey syrup sauce. The salad again had no dressing and its hard to see in the picture but it was baby corn, onion, tomato and other salad like items.
The main dining dessert was an ice cream on a stick. Not one I’ve seen before but it looked like a vanilla covered in chocolate one.
The main dining options were an appetiser of Marinated seafood medley followed by a choice of a western Lamb navarin with herbs, seasonal vegetables and potatoes or an eastern Wok fried chicken with wolfberries, braised vegetables and steamed rice. Mum had the chicken and said it was good.
For breakfast, the meal was almost identical to what we had on the flight from Singapore to Myanmar. Once again this was amazing! One of the best airline meals I’ve ever had. Potato (or rice mash), chickpeas in a lightly spiced curry gravy and vada.
The main dining cart options were fruit appetiser & fruit yogurt with a choice of either Fried vermicelli with chicken and vegetables or Spinach omelette with grilled pork sausage, tomato and roast potatoes.
Mum got the spinach omelette – it went back uneaten. Very unappealing.
It appears with the vegetarian meals that you run the risk of getting something not that great depending on the region your meal comes from. However I am reluctant to go with the western vegetarian meals as the breakfasts IMO are disgusting and inedible. Crayon like vegetarian sausages, those disgusting slimy button mushroom or revolting scrambled eggs or a tasteless omelette – these breakfasts actually makes me feel physically ill.
Singapore Airlines offer 6 different vegetarian meal options (as shown below), the Vegetarian Oriental Meal is also a good option if you want a variation from the usual offerings. However, I’ve found these often don’t have a very interesting dessert though – BYO chocolate 😉
