When Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion attraction first opened in 1969, one of the effects was the Hatbox Ghost. There were apparently some difficulties with the way the effect looked to the public, and within a short period of time, he was removed from the ride.
However he remained in the Disney fandom as a beloved, favourite character.
Fast forward to 2015, Disneyland’s 60th celebration and one of the “pluses” to the Haunted Mansion was the return of the Hatbox Ghost. Just past the bride scene, the hatbox ghost now appears (before you turn backwards and go down to the cemetery).
We got a really good look at this new effect as our doom buggy (ride vehicle) paused for a couple of minutes right next to him and I was able to capture this Disney magic on video.
I remember going on the Haunted Mansion when it first came out (“E-Ticket Ride”) and there were so many ghosts and things popping up everywhere, that some people suffered heart attacks. I know at 10 years old in 1970, I was scared sh*tless!! They toned it way down. 🙂
Or maybe we just now know what to expect. I love it, such a fun attraction! I was thrilled they bought back the infamous hatbox ghost too! 🙂
