… and as too late to obtain overnight leave. At night while in Beer Bar met T Coutts (?). Afterward looking in at several cafes – all places now close down at 10P.M.
Sunday April 25
Day 750
As arranged met Jim in Club, spending the day together. While sitting in Club at night met one of the boys just back from Italy – got captured at Capuzzo in Syrian Campaign. Leaving Cairo for Alex tomorrow. On returning to Club after seeing Jim off, met two other Kiwis also going to Alex. So arranged to go with them.
Monday April 26
Day 751
Left Cairo Main at 9-30AM arriving at Alex at 1PM. Unable to look in at NZYM so staying at Menorah House – very good & clean place. Alex seems much cleaner than Cairo – not so many wogs littering the streets – has beautiful promenade stretching 17 miles lined with cabarets etc. Lovely sea – breeze blowing continually. At night exceptionally strict “Black-out” – easily to get lost – visited several cabarets but all similar to those in Cairo.

Tuesday April 26 (actually the 27th and the day number below is also incorrect)
Day 751
In morning took tram to El Gaba sporting club – other two played golf while I looked about. Very pretty & well laid out grounds. Afternoon pictures “Black Swan” – Tyrone Power – rather nice theatre.

This history is so amazing. You bring him alive. Adjectives fail.
Thank you – it’s a very rewarding project
Is he getting close to returning home?
Not at all – he is away until 1945
. . . . . and once he left he didn’t return home until 1945?
Australians and New Zealanders were in for “the duration” and din’t get home until quite a while after the end.
I am pretty sure he goes to Italy from the photos and postcards and he definitely remains in Egypt for a fair while longer
I believe that’s correct but I am not sure. I doubt he got extended leave to travel all the way back to NZ due to the months the transit took.
