Last weekend as we were enjoying a sweaty balmy 38C in Melbourne, we visited the huge, incredible and heavily air-conditioned National Gallery of Victoria.

I’m not going to say too much about the gallery itself, other than its worth a visit.  It’s completely free and if you can’t find something of interest in there, there is something clearly wrong with you.

This post is a summary of many of the dogs we saw in the gallery, painted, drawn and otherwise artistically portrayed dogs, not real ones.  Though that would be really quite something if it was.

I was surprised how few dogs were actually in any of the art.  Until we got to the areas 16-19th centuries, “(hu)man’s best friend“, wasn’t included very often.  Still, there were more dogs than cats…
