Japan Pavilion at Epcot

Moving further clockwise from Italy Pavilion, and past the American Adventure on our stroll around the World Showcase at Epcot, we arrive at the Japan Pavilion. I love this pavilion.  The gardens are beautiful, the entertainment such as the Taiko Drummers is amazing and the shopping is IMO the best there is in Epcot.  I’ll cover that in another post … Continue reading

Taiko Drummers at the Japan Pavilion at Epcot

Next up around World Showcase after the Italy Pavilion at Epcot in Walt Disney World is the American Adventure, however on our trip we didn’t stop in except for a rather awful lunch (yeah, should have gone to Morocco). Our next stop therefore was the Japan Pavilion where the Taiko drummers were performing. I hope you enjoy … Continue reading

My Disney Collection – Tokyo Disneyland Resort tins

Like last week’s post about my Disney collection, this week’s items are again the newest items in my collection and coincidentally also from Tokyo Disneyland Resort.  I picked up these four tins locally today which I bought online for $1 (yes, all 4 for $1). The 3 smaller tins are trinket box sort of size while … Continue reading

My Disney Collection – Tokyo Disneyland Party Gras Parade Badge

It was requested some weeks ago that I highlight some items in my collection.   Great idea!  Thank you for the suggestion and to my other readers please go and visit The new Cryptic Garland where this brilliant idea came from. I have decided to start out this (probably extensive) series with the newest item in my … Continue reading

Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Jinja Shrine – Kamakura, Japan

Kamakura is a small town and a popular day trip from Tokyo.  One of the cool places we visited on our visit to Kamakura was the Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine. This is a small shrine but very popular with visitors.   The shrine is surrounded by high rock walls and is completely concealed from the outside.  Within the shrine … Continue reading

Hase Kannon Temple (Hasedera) – Kamakura, Japan

On our day trip from Tokyo to Kamakura, one of the Buddhist temples we visited was Hase Kannon Temple, also known as Hasedera. This temple was especially poignant as in the grounds are thousands of little statues called Jizo.  These are used by parents mourning the death of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion. The gardens … Continue reading

Daibutsu – The Great Buddha – Kamakura, Japan

The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu) is a huge bronze statue cast in 1252. It originally was housed in a temple, but the building was destroyed by a tsunami in the 1490s, so the bronze Buddha remains now exposed to the elements.  It weights around 100 tons and is over 13m tall. This Buddha is the subject of the poem The Buddha at Kamakura by Rudyard … Continue reading

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine – Kamakura, Japan

Our starting point for our day trip to Kamakura was Tsurugaoka Hachimangū the most important Shinto shrine in the area.  The shrine was originally built in 1063 and moved to its current location in 1191. For much of its history, for over 700 years until the Shinto and Buddhism Separation Order in 1868, it was also a Buddhist Temple.  One … Continue reading

Tokyo Disneyland Hotel – Japan

The Tokyo Disneyland Hotel is the middle of the pack in terms of the 3 Tokyo Disney Resort Hotels in terms of price. The theming for the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel is Victorian inspired with the Disney touch.  Its on the monorail loop at the Tokyo Disney Resort and walking distance to the main gate of the Tokyo Disneyland Park. … Continue reading

Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta – Japan

Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta is located partially within the incredible Tokyo DisneySea theme park and has an Italian theme to it.  Areas of the hotel are themed to an Italian Mediterranean sea port.  It overlooks the Mediterranean Harbour section of the park. It’s usually the most expensive of the 3 hotels at the resort and near impossible to … Continue reading

Visiting Asakusa Shrine in Tokyo, Japan

Our first day in Tokyo we visited the Tokyo suburb of Asakusa. We caught the train following some easy directions from the ticket counter. Try as hard as we could, even with non-existent Japanese we couldn’t get lost. On a couple of occasions we even had helpful locals ensure we got onto the right train – … Continue reading

Hokokuji Temple – The Bamboo Forest Temple, Kamakura, Japan

While we were in Tokyo last year, we took a day trip to the town of Kamakura which is known for its many beautiful temples.  It took about an hour on the train and was very easy to get to. A wonderful friend met us from the train, and then drove us around the temples for … Continue reading

Tokyo Disneyland Resort Merchandise… sigh…

I loved the Tokyo Disneyland Resort, it was quite simply amazing!  Tokyo DisneySea certainly lived up to the hype.  If you ever get a chance, run, do not walk… just go! But alas, for me, the merchandise was a little disappointing.  In the US, you are spoilt for choice, the World of Disney Stores stock … Continue reading

Duffy the Disney Bear – Tokyo Disneyland Resort

On October 14, 2010 Duffy the Disney bear was officially welcomed to the Disneyland Resort in California with a small ceremony at Disney California Adventure.  We were coincidently waiting at rope drop that day, while this short ceremony occurred. Considering myself a bit of a Disney expert, I thought “Duffy who”?  I’d never heard of … Continue reading
