Monday May 18

Day 407

Company parade.  Squad drill – Bren gun.  Another large convoy passed through on way to Turkey.  Wrote in afternoon.

Tuesday May 19th

Day 408

Platoon on guard.  Missed guard duty, free day.  Huge convoy of trucks & ???.  Passing on way to Turkey.  Played cards in evening.  Weather very warm.  Flies becoming persistent.

Wednesday May 20

Day 408 (he has miscounted so I will continue with his numbering)

Taken down road in lorry – surveyed area by drome.  Where manoeuvre is being held tomorrow. Arrived back at 10 o’clock then anti-tank lecture.  Received parcels from home numbered 12-13-14 & another parcel from Marg.

Thursday May 21st

Day 409

Taken east of aerodrome in readiness of manoeuvres.  Took up positions as paratroop.   Began raining heavily – man. cancelled before C&B (?) companies arrived.  Continued raining most of the day so free day.

Friday May 22nd

Day 410

Small routine march.  On road block.  Guard at night.  Finished C.B.

Saturday May 23rd

Day 411

Doing road block.  Played cards in intervals.

Sunday May 24th

Day 412

Routine march to border.  Leave to Aleppo.  Saw picture “52nd Street”.

Monday May 25th

Day 413

Company parade then P.T & run during morning.  On drome guard at night.

  1. He served in Egypt, Libya and now where I am at in the diary in Syria. I think he ends up in Italy at some point too. But I am learning as I am transcribing. I haven’t pre-read his diary.
